An Awareness Test
Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:45
Transport For London's brilliant "Do the Test" cycling safety video invites you to pay close attention to a video of some basketball players, then demonstrates just how little you really saw, ending with a voice-over that explains how easy it is to miss things you're not looking for, like cyclists:
This phenomenon is known as "change blindness" - only a tiny fraction of all the information going into your brain enters your consciousness. People often fail to see a change in their surroundings because their attention is elsewhere.

Even stranger, if you are concentrating on something, you can become blind to other events that you would normally notice. This "inattention blindness" is possibly the reason why motorists collide with cyclists.

Just as it is important for road users to keep an eye out for cyclists, cyclists must also take steps to ensure they are seen by motorists.

2008 US Open of Mountain Biking
Friday, 22 February 2008 04:36

usopen2008.jpg

VERNON, NEW JERSEY (February 22, 2008) – Diablo Freeride Park, located only 47 miles from downtown New York City, announced today that preliminary details regarding the sixth annual U.S. Open of Mountain Biking are now available. Official online athlete and team registration will begin March 7th at 9am. Historically, the U.S. Open field is predominately pre-registered and all interested participants are urged to register in advance to secure their qualifying position.

In 2007, nearly 450 downhill-specific racers from 7 different countries and 37 different states, convened at Diablo Freeride Park to vie for America’s most prestigious gravity title; the U.S. Open.

The U.S. Open legacy continues in 2008 by offering one of downhill mountain biking’s richest cash purses in the world with top finishers, both men and women, receiving a staggering $5,000 cash payout for the win. In addition, the U.S. Open provides up-and-coming racers with the rare opportunity to mix with and compete against some of the top gravity athletes in the world. “We feel very strongly about the U.S. Open format and providing aspiring downhill racers with the unique opportunity to compete at the highest level without redundant licensing and class restrictions” said Shawn Orecchio, Diablo General Manager. “At the Open, there’s no hiding behind excess classes … Simply put, the fastest racer wins.”

Slalom fans rejoice! For the first time in U.S. Open history, the event will feature a Dual Slalom discipline to add to the racing excitement. With the assistance of the Diablo Gravity Team, Diablo course designers will construct a unique Dual Slalom mixing traditional slalom traits with a unique blend of elements and features. “We are very excited to be offering a Dual Slalom discipline to the U.S. Open”, said Orecchio. “Popularity and demand for Dual has increased in recent years and it is our goal to provide a course that will truly rejuvenate the discipline in our area”.

Trialsin.com Avalon Indoor Trials Competition
Monday, 18 February 2008 04:08

TRIALSINad.jpg

[via trialsin.com] You heard it right! We've taken the plunge and secured Avalon Skate park in Baltimore, MD for the first of our competition series this year! We are picking up where Motorama and Rays left off and giving you a quality event that will be nothing short of a blast. We have the venue for the entire day so there will be both a Trials and Dual Trials comp.

To ride the dual trials you must compete in the Trials event as well (no ringers). You can use a different bike (a more old school or skate park oriented bike will be faster for the Dual Trials event).

Courses will be 4 loops on 3 sections for Beginner, Sport, and Elite. Beginner and Sport will be like typical trials competitions from a skill level perspective. Elite will be like an expert/pro combined loop with different routes for negative points. Don't be intimidated if you are an expert rider the straight course will be built for you, but there will be negative lines if you think you got em.
